Rod Joyce

Tour Guide // Product Development

Rod is a professional interpreter/translator for modern languages – in particular English, Italian & German. Through this he has become more and more a people person as his work includes a great amount of live interpretations.

His big love is cycling though – any old dirt track will do! This region has a vast variety of cycling paths, tracks, roads and all have one thing in common: they cross through beautiful stunning scenery – whether the Northumberland coast, C&C cycle path from East to West, Hadrian’s Wall or Pennine Way… In Scotland, some of the best cycle paths will take you through Glencoe or to some of the Western Isles…

It is this passion for people & cycling that, combined, creates the splendid mix of becoming a great tour guide! Rod went on to train with us and now produces cycling tours for us & also conducts these on a regular basis.

Favourite travel experience

One of the greatest mainline railway journeys you can take is London to Edinburgh - this is definitely one of my favourite travel experiences! Take some time on your way North and stop in the historic city of York - immerse yourself in history, intrigue and industrial heritage in this fascinating, very walkable, city! Continue past the dales into Durham - again, take some time to explore the magnificent cathedral & castle (both UNESCO World Heritage sites) before heading past the impressive Angel of the North and reaching Newcastle. Spend a day or two here, discover the architecture, culture and one of the best regeneration projects in the country! The riverside, with its array of galleries & the stunning Sage Gateshead philharmonic, are not to be missed. Continue along the beautiful Northumberland coast - make sure you sit on the right hand side of the train carriage (when journeying north)! The scenery is simply awe-inspiring - castles, sandy beaches, Holy Island, natural beauty all round... Then, after a total journey time of only 3.5 hours from London (with no stops), reach Scotland's capital, Edinburgh!

Favourite place

One of my favourite things to do is cycle! I love the outdoors and don't really have that ONE place. Anywhere with breathtaking scenery and a good cycle area is perfect for me - therefore, just about anywhere in the North of England is great!
