Jane Sowdon

Tour Guide

Jane is an amazing guide! Although she grew up in London, Jane moved to the North East in 1984 to study German and History – and put simply, she fell in love and stayed. She married a true ‘Geordie’ meaning she is now fully adopted into North East England life and culture. Jane has been teaching German for over 30 years and currently teaches part-time at two universities. She is passionate about the region and looks forward to showing you some of the historic, beautiful, and fascinating places we are all so lucky to have here.

Favourite travel experience

My favourite travel experience is driving up the steep and very winding narrow road from Haydon Bridge to Alston in the autumn. This road takes you past the wonderfully-named Plankey Mill. The trees lower down the hill are beautiful at that time of year and as you rise up, the landscape turns to open farmland and moors. You can see for miles, drive without meeting another car and in the winter the road is sometimes closed because of the snow.

Favourite place

My favourite place is Alnwick, in the heart of Northumberland. I love the castle, the gardens with the beautiful waterfall and most of all the treehouse. I am often to be found in Alnwick visiting Barter Books secondhand bookstore in the former railway station. You can never have too many books!
